Brewers Beat Cardinals In 11 Innings
(St. Louis, MO) -- Lyle Overbay drove in the winning run in the top of the 11th inning as the Brewers clipped the Cardinals 5-4 at Busch Stadium. Overbay plated two and Carlos Gomez hit a solo home run for Milwaukee, which will go for the three-game sweep on Wednesday. Kyle Lohse hit a two-run single and tossed six innings of three-run ball in a no-decision. Tyler Thornburg pitched two scoreless innings for his third win. Francisco Rodriguez closed it out to tie the MLB record for saves before May 1st with his 13th of the season. Yadier Molina belted a three-run homer and Allen Craig tripled in the other run for the Redbirds, who have dropped five-of-seven. Kevin Siegrist suffered the loss.
Cardinals youngster Randall Grichuk made his first start last night, playing in center field and batting seventh. Grichuk went 1-for-5 but struck out three times in the loss. He was recalled along with Greg Garcia earlier this week from Triple-A Memphis.
The Cardinals and Brewers close out their three-game series from Busch Stadium this afternoon. Shelby Miller takes a 2-2 record to the mound for the Redbirds. Milwaukee counters with Matt Garza, who is 1-2. First pitch is set for 12:45.
Reds Clip Cubs
(Cincinnati, OH) -- Billy Hamilton's first career home run helped lift the Reds to a 3-2 win over the Cubs at Great American Ball Park. Hamilton finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Chris Heisey's one-run single in the sixth turned out to be the winning run. Alfredo Simon improved to 4-and-1 dealing six innings of two-run ball. The Reds are 12-14. Starlin Castro drove in the only two runs in the loss. Emilio Bonifacio and Ryan Kalish each had two hits and a run scored. Jeff Samardzija took his third loss of the season giving up three runs and not making it out of the sixth inning. Chicago is 8-17.
Cubs manager Rick Renteria received his second ejection of the season last night. Home plate umpire Alan Porter gave the skipper the boot for arguing about the strike zone in the bottom of the sixth inning. The ejection came after a rain delay of over an hour.
The Cubs and Reds wrap their abbreviated two-game series tonight from Cincinnati. Chicago sends Edwin Jackson to the mound, sporting a 1-2 record. The Reds counter with Tony Cingrani, who is 2-2 on the year. First pitch from the Queen City is set for 6:10.
Tigers Edge White Sox
(Chicago, IL) -- Bryan Holaday laid down an RBI bunt single to score Austin Jackson in the top of the ninth, lifting the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Victor Martinez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for Detroit, which has won three out of four. Justin Verlander allowed three runs in seven innings but Joba Chamberlain earned the win while Joe Nathan notched his fifth save. Adam Eaton, Gordon Beckham and Adam Dunn each knocked in runs in a three-run third for Chicago, which failed to hold the early lead. Jose Quintana struck out ten over six innings of three-run ball but Ronald Belisario took the loss. The Sox had won three out of four.
The White Sox and Tigers conclude their brief two-game series from U.S. Cellular Field this afternoon. Chicago sends Hector Noesi to the mound looking for his first win. Detroit counters with Max Scherzer, who is 2-1. First pitch is set for 1:10.
Mets Put Away Phillies
(Philadelphia, PA) -- Jonathon Niese tossed seven innings of one-run ball as the Mets dropped the Phillies 6-1 at Citizens Bank Park. Niese improved to 2-and-2 while Daniel Murphy went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ruben Tejada finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for New York, which has won five out of six. Cole Hamels was tagged for six runs in four-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 0-2. Marlon Byrd hit a solo homer for Philadelphia, which had won three out of four.
Fernandez Dominates As Marlins Rout Braves
(Miami, FL) -- Jose Fernandez dazzled as the Marlins cruised to an 8-0 rout of the Braves in Miami. Fernandez allowed two hits and two walks while striking out eight in eight innings to improve to 4-1. Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer while Jarrod Saltalamacchia was 3-for-4 with a solo shot. Ed Lucas also went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run while Marcel Ozuna drove in two. The Fish have won two out of three. Alex Wood was tagged for seven runs on ten hits over five-plus frames, falling to 2-4 for Atlanta. Jason Heyward managed a double for the Braves, who saw a four-game winning streak end.
Stubbs Lifts Rockies Past D-Backs
(Phoenix, AZ) -- Drew Stubbs hit a ninth inning pinch-hit home run off Addison Reed to give the Rockies a 5-4 lead and eventual win over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Troy Tulowitzki drove in two with a home run and finished with two hits while Justin Morneau and Nolan Arenado had an RBI each. Starter Tyler Chatwood grabbed a no-decision after five-plus innings of work, giving up three runs on six hits. Boone Logan grabbed a sloppy win in relief after giving up two hits and a run in his inning of work and LaTroy Hawkins picked up his ninth save. Reed fell to 0-2 and starter Mike Bolsinger tossed five-plus innings, giving up four runs on nine hits. A.J. Pollock went 1-for-3 with a dinger in the loss, while Aaron Hill and Eric Chavez each drove in a run.
Mariners Victorious In Cano's Return To Yankee Stadium
(New York, NY) -- The Mariners walked out of Yankee Stadium with a 6-3 victory over the Bombers in Robinson Cano's first game back in the Bronx. Cano finished 1-for-5 but drove in a run and stole a base. Corey Hart drove in two runs on a fifth-inning double and Mike Zunino collected four hits in the victory. Chris Young grabbed the win after 5 2/3 innings of work, giving up two runs on three hits. CC Sabathia was tagged for four runs in five innings, giving up nine hits to move to 3-and-3 with the loss. Mark Teixeira went deep for his lone hit of the contest while Brett Gardner and Ichiro Suzuki each collected two hits for the Yankees.
Red Sox Get Past Rays
(Boston, MA) -- Shane Victorino went 4-for-4 with two RBI as the Red Sox downed the Rays 7-4 at Fenway Park. Jackie Bradley Jr. finished 2-for-4 and knocked in two while David Ortiz added an RBI single. John Lackey pitched eight innings of two-run ball to move to 4-and-2 while Koji Uehara recorded the final out for his sixth save. Boston has won five out of seven. Erik Bedard allowed a run over five innings in the start for Tampa Bay while Brandon Gomes took the loss. James Loney and Wil Myers each had two hits for the Rays, who have lost six out of seven.
Athletics Roll Rangers
(Arlington, TX) -- Josh Reddick and Derek Norris each drove in three runs as the Athletics cruised to a 9-3 win over the Rangers at Globe Life Park. Oakland blew the game open in the fifth with five runs. Scott Kazmir improved to 4-and-0 after allowing three runs in five innings as the A's won their fourth in six games. Martin Perez took a scoreless innings streak of 26 into the start but was tagged for eight runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. He fell to 4-1. Prince Fielder and Alex Rios each drove in a run for Texas, which has lost three straight.
Angels Get Past Indians
(Anaheim, CA) -- Erick Aybar went 4-for-5 with an RBI as the Angels downed the Indians 6-4 in Anaheim. Chris Iannetta was 2-for-5 and knocked in a pair while Howie Kendrick ripped a two-run single for Los Angeles. Jered Weaver allowed two runs over five-and-a-third innings to improve to 2-and-2 while Joe Smith recorded his second save. The Halos won their second straight after dropping three of four. Carlos Santana went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI while Asdrubal Cabrera finished 3-for-4. Corey Kluber took the loss after allowing four runs in four-and-two-thirds innings as Cleveland lost its fifth straight.
Orioles, Pirates Postponed
(Baltimore, MD) -- Tuesday's scheduled game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Eastern. The date was originally an off-day for both teams. The opener of the three-game set between the O's and Bucs is now set for Wednesday.
Dodgers, Twins Postponed
(Minneapolis, MN) -- Tuesday's scheduled game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins at Target Field was postponed due to inclement weather. A cold, wet system moving through the area called for rain mixed with snow. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Thursday, with the regularly-scheduled game at 1:10 p.m. Eastern and the nightcap at 7:10 p.m.
Nationals Edge Astros
(Houston, TX) -- Adam LaRoche doubled in the tying run in the eighth and singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth as the Nationals downed the Astros 4-3 at Minute Maid Park. Gio Gonzalez tossed six innings of three-run ball with nine strikeouts in a no-decision. Jayson Werth homered in the victory. Tyler Clippard grabbed the win in relief and Rafael Soriano notched his fifth save. The Astros struck out 13 times in the loss and had only five hits. George Springer drove in two and Dexter Fowler added the other RBI in the loss. Jarred Cosart pitched six innings of two-run ball but did not factor in the decision. Josh Fields took the loss.
