Wainwright, Cardinals Roll Nationals

(Washington, DC) -- Adam Wainwright tossed a two-hit shutout to guide the Cardinals to an 8-0 win over the Nationals in Washington. Wainwright struck out eight and walked three in the win. Matt Adams knocked in three runs for St. Louis, which improved to 10-6. Matt Holliday added two RBI for the Cards. Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond had the hits for Washington, which dropped to 9-7. Taylor Jordan allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings for the loss

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. He hurt himself trying to run out a bunt in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game at Milwaukee. Kelly has allowed only one earned run in three starts so far this season. The Cardinals also optioned pitcher Keith Butler to Triple-A Memphis and recalled pitchers Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon from the same club.


Red Sox Take Rubber Match With White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- David Ross doubled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning as the Red Sox edged the White Sox 3-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Jonathan Herrera also plated a run on a bunt single in the ninth, while Xander Bogaerts homered in the sixth for Boston. Jon Lester struck out nine over eight innings of one-run ball as he evened his record at 2-2. Koji Uehara closed it out for his third save. Adam Eaton's infield single in the sixth drove in the lone run for the Pale Hose, who fell to 8-8. Ronald Belisario suffered the loss.

The Chicago White Sox made two moves Thursday. The Sox selected the contract of pitcher Zach Putnam from Triple-A Charlotte and designated pitcher Donnie Veal for assignment. Putnam was 1-0 in six innings for Charlotte this season. Veal appeared in seven games for Chicago but allowed five runs in six frames.


Cubs Clash With Cincinnati

(Chicago, IL) -- The Chicago Cubs welcome the Cincinnati Reds to Wrigley Field today to start a three-game series. The contest begins a seven-game homestand for Chicago, which plays four games against Arizona from Monday through Thursday. The Cubs are expected to send Jeff Samardjiza to the hill while the Reds counter with Alfredo Simon.


Phillies Blank Braves Behind Burnett

(Philadelphia, PA) -- A.J. Burnett and two relievers combined on a four-hitter as the Phillies shut out the Braves 1-0 at Citizens Bank Park. Ben Revers singled in the game's only run in the bottom of the eighth inning for Philadelphia, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Burnett allowed just three hits over seven innings in a no-decision. Antonio Bastardo got the win and Jonathan Papelbon his fourth save. Alex Wood struck out seven while allowing just one run in an eight-inning complete game to take the tough-luck loss. B.J. Upton, Freddie Freeman, Andrelton Simmons and Gerald Laird had hits for Atlanta.


Ryu, Dodgers Eek Out Win Over Giants

(San Fransisco, CA) -- Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed seven shutout frames and the Dodgers held on to defeat the Giants in a pitcher's dual, 2-1, from AT&T Park. Ryu scattered four hits and a walk to improve to 3-1. Kenley Jansen allowed one run before retiring the final batter for his fifth save. Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Tim Federowicz also drove in a run as the Dodgers avoided a three-game sweep. Madison Bumgarner took the loss, as he allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six over four and a third innings. It was Bumgarner 's first loss since last August 28. Ehire Adrianza went 3-for-3 with an RBI single to account for the Giants' only run.


Rockies, Padres Split Series

(San Diego, CA) -- A three-run seventh inning gave the Rockies a 3-1 win over the Padres at Petco Park to close out a four-game set. The teams split the series. Justin Morneau, Wilin Rosario and Nolan Arenado each drove in a run for Colorado, which moved to 8-9. Franklin Morales earned his first win of the season with six innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts. LaTroy Hawkins grabbed his fourth save. Xavier Nady's solo shot supplied the only run for San Diego. Ian Kennedy fell to 1-3, allowing three runs in seven innings with seven strikeouts. San Diego is 7-9.


Pirates Pound Brewers

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Andrew McCutchen clubbed a two-run homer and drove in three as the Pirates pounded the Brewers 11-2 in the opener of a four-game series at PNC Park. Josh Harrison broke a two-all tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Pedro Alvarez added a three-run blast during a six-run eighth for the Bucs, who evened their record at 8-8. Gaby Sanchez also went deep in the victory. Edinson Volquez tossed seven innings of two-run ball for his first win. Aramis Ramirez and Jonathan Lucroy plated a run each for Milwaukee, which has dropped three-of-four since a 10-2 start. Rob Wooten suffered the loss.


Tigers Top Tribe Behind Kinsler's Four Ribbies

(Detroit, MI) -- Ian Kinsler went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI to power the Tigers to a 7-5 win over the Indians at Comerica Park. Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Kinsler connected for a three-run shot to put Detroit ahead to stay. Rajai Davis had two hits and an RBI and Austin Jackson plated two runs as the Tigers split the two-game, weather-shortened series. Justin Verlander struck out seven while allowing three unearned runs in five innings for his second win. Joe Nathan notched his second save. Danny Salazar took the loss for Cleveland. Michael Brantley hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs in defeat.


Kouzmanoff, Rangers Outslug Mariners

(Arlington, TX) -- Kevin Kouzmanoff continued his torrid hitting as the Rangers outslugged the Mariners 8-6 in Arlington. Kouzmanoff went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. He is hitting .414 since being called up last week. Shin-Soo Choo hit his first homer as a Ranger and Mitch Moreland drove in three runs. Pedro Figueroa got the win in relief and Joakim Soria his second save as Texas took three-of-four in the series. Joe Beimel suffered the loss. Robinson Cano hit his first home run for Seattle, which has lost five-of-six.


Yankees Rout Rays

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Alfonso Soriano, Brian McCann and Yangervis Solarte all homered in the Yankees' 10-2 rout of the Rays at Tropicana Field. Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian Roberts both tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice for New York, which improved to 10-and-6 with its fifth straight win. CC Sabathia struck out six while giving up two runs, one earned, in seven innings as he evened his record at 2-2. Sean Rodriguez went deep for the Rays, who have lost four in-a-row to dip to 7-9. David Price was tagged for six runs and 10 hits in five frames as he fell to 2-1.


Royals Roll Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Alcides Escobar knocked in two runs to help the Royals sweep the Astros with a 5-1 win in the finale of the three-game series at Minute Maid Park.  Norichika Aoki and Alex Gordon each scored twice for Kansas City, which improved to 7-7. James Shields allowed one run and struck out 12 in eight innings for the win. Scott Feldman gave up five total runs in six innings for the loss. Chris Carter scored the only run for Houston, which dipped to 5-and-11.
