Ryan Hutchinson was too much for Effingham St. Anthony High School Tuesday evening as Mattoon edged the Bulldogs 4-3 in baseball action.
Hutchinson was the driving force offensively as he knocked out a two-run homer in the third to give the Green Wave a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs came back with a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth but the Hutchinson home run was the deciding factor.
Huthcinson then came on in relief in the seventh. The Bulldogs' Zach Gardewine drew a leadoff walk and was sacrified to second by Drew Gibson. But Hutchinson got tough on the mound and struck out the next two batters to preserve the victory.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the first on back-to-back singles by Jacob Lorenz and Austin Bushur. Eli Dasenbrock followed with an RBI single.
Brandon Puckett then tripled in the fourth and came home on a ground out by James Kabbes. The final run came in the sixth on a single by Dasenbrock and a sacrifice fly by Puckett.
