James Joseph “Jim” Dust, 55, of rural Effingham passed away suddenly on Monday, August 26, 2013, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek. Burial is in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military rites. Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, August 28th with a parish wake service at 7:00 p.m. and a combined Knights of Columbus and Men’s Sodality rosary to follow at Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Help of Christians Church or the Honor Flight. Services are in care of Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham.

Jim was born on March 14, 1958 in Effingham, the son of Ambrose and Bertha (Meyer) Dust. He graduated from Teutopolis High School in 1976. On August 29, 1981 Jim married Kathy Thoele and together they raised 4 sons and she survives.

Jim had a long standing military career beginning when he joined the National Guard in 1976. He was a member of Company B 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Brigade. During his career, his tours of duty included England, Norway, and Alaska. He also worked on the levies during the flooding of the Mississippi in 1993. He retired in 1996 as 1st Sergeant with 21 years of military service.

Jim worked at the Effingham Equity in both the Marshall and Effingham locations since 1976. He was also engaged in the family farm. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying all aspects of hunting with his four sons and was a dedicated member of the NRA. He belonged to the Foreway Men’s Golf League, the K-Bowl Men’s Bowling League, the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874 order of the 3rd degree, and the Green Creek Men’s March Birthday Club. He was a member and past president of the Parish Council and a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Mary Help of Christians Church.

Jim was a hard worker who always had a joke or a bottle of homemade wine to share. He will be loved and remembered by Kathy, his wife of 32 years; sons, Joshua, Jason, Justin, and Jacob, all of Effingham; mother, Bertha Dust of Effingham; siblings, Mary (husband, Dave) Klitzing of Altamont; Karen (husband, Larry) Mietzner of Effingham; Steve (wife, Sherri) of Effingham; Tom (wife, Elaine) of Effingham; Dan (wife, Ruth) of Dieterich; Rose (husband, Steve) Kopplin of Altamont; JoEllen (husband, Jeff) Armstrong of Altamont; Laura (husband, Chris) Deters of Teutopolis; Beth (husband, Matt) Koester of Jewett; Lisa (husband, Wally) Thompson of Effingham; and Christina (husband, Mark) Probst of Teutopolis; and in-laws, Leroy and Dolores Thoele of Teutopolis; sister-in-law, Monica Niemerg of Teutopolis; and 57 nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Ambrose Dust; grandparents, William and Rosa Dust, and Joseph and Margaret Meyer, all of Effingham.
