Verna Winn Titus (“Grandmommie”) of Greenup, IL, age 91, was called home to heaven at 5:53 am on March 29, 2025, after 8 years at the Cumberland Nursing and Rehab Center (Greenup).
Verna was born in Jacksonville, IL on July 25, 1933, the daughter of John Stanley and Grace Winn. Later, due to job opportunities, her dad moved the family to the town of Verna’s dreams, Casey, IL. She possessed mesmerizing beauty and aspired to be a model until the love of her life, the late Eddie Titus, changed all that. They married in Casey at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on September 18, 1955. One year later, their only child, a daughter, Robin, was born. From that day forward, the three were inseparable. Verna had many gifts and passions. She was a brilliant artist working in oil paints. Further, she was a talented hairdresser, stylish shopper of fine clothes, an acknowledged landscape designer, and an avid fan of her cherished daytime soap opera, “As the World Turns”. Her culinary skills were second to none and she prided herself on preparing Eddie and Robin’s home-cooked supper at 5:30 pm each day. Verna worked at the IGA (Greenup), Martinque Dress Shop, and owned and operated her own beauty shop within her home. Her civic pursuits are well-known; she and Judy Sherwood Timm, as leading members of the budding Historical Society, inspired the town of Greenup to retain its rich train history by bringing the decaying depot to main street. Additionally, she was involved with a campaign to restore the porches that so magnificently adorn downtown Greenup. For years, Verna was active in the Greenup Young Women’s Club and brought style and grace to all their activities.
Surviving: daughter: Robin Titus Carr (Dan) of Greenup; grandchildren: Jake McNeely (Soua) of Tracy, CA, and Taylor McNeely (Christopher), of Montpelier, VT; great-grandsons: River and Ashley; her special angel, Pam Winn Rondina (Alan) of Norton, MA, and several nieces and nephews.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Ed Titus, on Jan. 11, 2025, her parents, her brothers- Stanley Winn Jr., Don Winn, David (born when Verna was in high school), and Richard. Ed & Verna lived in and loved Greenup for all their days.
The funeral will be held at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup at 11:00 am on Friday, April 4,2025, with the burial to follow at the Greenup Cemetery. Visitation starts one hour prior to the funeral (10:00am). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations honoring Verna can be made directly to the Greenup United Methodist Church, P.O.
