Published on March 13 2025 10:49 am
Gregory D. Habbe passed from this life early in the morning of March 11, 2025.
He made his entrance into this world on February 24, 1948 as the first born child of Warren and Eulala Habbe, who have preceded him in death. Greg graduated from Effingham High School in 1966 and then graduated from SIU-Carbondale with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. He was employed by Crossroads Press for 20 years as a customer service representative. He then went on to assume ownership of Warren Habbe Wholesale until his retirement in 2007. Greg was a gifted athlete with a love and affinity for baseball. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and U of I Basketball. But his real passion was for the outdoors, particularly hunting with his beloved Brittany Spaniels. In addition, he was a lifelong collector of sporting collectibles and achieved expert status in that area. Greg was a lifelong resident of Effingham and also a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his brother, Dave; his sister-in-law, Sandi; nephews, Eric and Max; a niece, Rachel; and multiple cousins, two of whom were very close, Terry Soilleux and Kurt Hankins.
In summary, Greg was a very good man by God’s grace, honest, caring, and unpretentious. I was blessed to have him in my life. I’m looking forward to seeing you again, my brother.
