David Wayne Beals, Sr., 62, of Stewardson died at 9am Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in his home.

David was born Dec. 22, 1950 in Stewardson, IL the son of Chester and Freda Fern (Long) Beals.  He married Rayleen Summerton on Aug. 18, 1970 in Stewardson.  David was a graduate of Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the Class of 1969.  He worked as a mixer of bread products and retired from Lenders Bagels Co. in Mattoon, IL.  He was employed there for 37 years as it went through several name changes (Kraft Foods, Kellogg Foods, Aurora Foods and, finally, Lenders Bagels).  He served his country with honor in Viet Nam as a combat infantryman in the United States Army.  David was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.  He was a member of American Legion Post 611 of Stewardson for nearly 40 years, and was affiliated with the United Methodist Church of Stewardson.  David was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting.  He was passionate about riding his motorcycle.

Surviving are his wife Rayleen; son David Beals Jr. and friend Rachel Davis of Stewardson;  sisters Maxine Kaufman and husband Louis of Stewardson and Nancy Mingus and husband Wayne of Stewardson; brothers: Jackie Beals of Wichita Falls, TX and Charlie Beals of Mattoon, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Larry Beals and Gary Beals.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday Aug. 3, 2013 in Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson.  Pastor Kathy Lewis will officiate.  Flag presentation will be made by Stewardson American Legion Post # 611. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Friday in the funeral home. The family requests casual attire. Burial will be Stewardson Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in David’s memory to the American Cancer Society or Crossroads Cancer Center of Effingham, IL.
