Lawrence P Carie, 88 of Effingham, II, passed peacefully at 7:45 am Thursday, February 27, 2025.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the church, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary and fourth-degree service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to a scholarship fund in Lawrence’s honor. Arrangements are in the care of Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham.
He was born on July 4, 1936, at Carie's Prairie in Knox County, Vincennes, Indiana. He was the son of August C Carie and Mary Louise Mouzin Carie of Vincennes, Indiana. Lawrence attended St. Thomas Grade School and Central Catholic High School in Vincennes, Indiana. "Windy" played basketball at Vincennes University and graduated from St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana. Lawrence married Barbara Green on June 14, 1958. He started his teaching and coaching career in Teutopolis, Illinois in the fall of 1958. There he was the head coach of Basketball (23 years) Baseball, track, and volleyball. He also was instrumental in starting the girls varsity softball program. Along with performing his coaching and teaching duties, he was given the title of Athletic Director and eventually retired in 1993. Lawrence was an IBCA and IHSA Hall of Fame Coach. He was active in the Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree member, Past Grand Knight, and Past District Deputy. He was Editor of the Knights of Columbus and Illinois Auxiliary Postmaster newsletters. Lawrence was also a 3rd Order Secular Franciscan. He also distributed the eucharist to all the nursing homes and homebound Catholics wanting to receive the precious host. The Elks Hoop Shoot was one of his greatest joys. He also enjoyed Cardinals baseball, camping, car rides, visiting family, watching all of his grandchildren play ball, and getting his Vincennes, Mouzin Watermelons. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 66 years, and five children all of Illinois, Dan (Tabitha) Carie of Jacksonville, Donna (Otis) Rincker of Strasburg, Diane (Jim) Deters of Tolono, Dennis (Tammy) Carie, and Doris (Tony) Zerrusen of Effingham. He is also survived by his sister MaryLou Snider. They have 20 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 9 brothers, and grandsons, Phillip Dale Rincker and Jordan Reinhart.
Lawrence was a person who always believed in Faith, Family, and praying the rosary. LC, Windy, Larry, Coach, Mr. Carie, Mr. C loved those titles and he especially liked his favorite titles of grandpa and great-grandpa.
