Michael was born on September 1, 1964, in Effingham, Illinois to Sammy W. Flowers (Dereatha) and Peggy L. (Golden) Flowers. Mike was employed at Fedders in Effingham for many years until their closing. He spent his last many years of employment with the Rumpke Waste and Recycling Service (formerly Rubbish Gobbler Sanitation Service). He was dedicated, respected and well liked as an employee for over thirty years. Mike married Cathy (Leturno) Flowers on April 29, 2016 after being together for 14 years prior. Together they joined families and welcomed many grandchildren. Mike was adamant family was not just bonded only by blood, the words step or half siblings or child were never words in his vocabulary. To our dad, family was the most important part of his life. He was an avid classic muscle car and motorcycle enthusiast. He had many hobbies including hunting, bee keeping, gardening, wheeling and dealing, and racing his sons-in-law one highway at a time. He would spend several hours caring for his pets, especially his little dog, Pepper. He had a love for cooking and enjoyed collecting amazing “treasures”/junk. He enjoyed camping, swimming, and epic burnouts with his grandkids. He was always on the phone checking in on the women in his life, his wife and daughters, consistently throughout the day. He enjoyed bragging about his children and grandchildren to anyone who would listen. If you ever needed to hear a good story, he could keep you entertained for hours. He never was short on words or laughter. Being a father and grandfather was one of the greatest joys of his life. Mike will be loved and missed by the many who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Cathy Flowers of Altamont; daughters, Heather Upton of Bloomington, IN, Carrie (Chris) Mettendorf of O’Fallon, MO, Amber (Tommy) Wallin of Strasburg, IL, Michelle (Luke) Dial of St. Peter, IL, and Brandy (Thomas) Gardner of Farina, IL; grandchildren, Brenden Davis, Benjamin, Emma, and Sawyer Mettendorf, Brady and Finn Wallin, Taylor Buchanan, Abby and Gage Heuerman, Lydia Flowers, Braxton and Maddy Blackwell and Riley Rhoads; sisters, Angela Marsh and Danene Farlow; brothers; Ronald (Dana) Flowers, Shannon (Kelly) Flowers, Todd Flowers, Kenny Hoffman and David Farlow. He was also loved by many nieces, nephews, cousins and anyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sammy Flowers and Jerry (Darla) Hoffman.
