Joan Catherine Newenham (78) of Dieterich

Joan Catherine Newenham, age 78, of Dieterich, Illinois, passed away at 10:00 AM - Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.
Joan was born on July 20, 1946, in Effingham, Illinois, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Habing) Hawickhorst. She married Roger Newenham on December 31, 1966, in Teutopolis, Illinois. One of eight children, Joan was fond of saying she was the only one of her siblings born in a hospital.
Joan is survived by her husband of 58 years, Roger Newenham, three children, Monica (Rusty) Dorsey of Beardstown, Illinois; Rob (Shiela) Newenham of Athol, Idaho; and Melissa (Ron) Cowman of Oak Ridge, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Oliver Hoenes (Allie Dawson), Colten Hoenes, Madison (Lewis) Brown, and Mason Cowman; her sisters Marie Schmidt of Effingham, Illinois; Rose (Ron) Croak of St. Louis, Missouri; brother Richard (Wendy) Hawickhorst of Teutopolis, Illinois; and her sister-in-law Sandy (Bernard) Hawickhorst of St. Louis, Missouri.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Mitchell Cowman, and her brothers, Robert Hawickhorst, Father Maurus Hawickhorst OFM, Gerald Hawickhorst, and Bernard Hawickhorst.
Joan graduated from Teutopolis High School with the Class of 1964. She moved to Springfield, Illinois, where she met Roger. Joan and Roger married and then lived in Ohio and Louisiana while he served in the United States Air Force. After Roger was discharged, they settled in Beardstown, Illinois. She held a variety of jobs while she was raising her children in Beardstown. Joan was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown for many years before moving to Dieterich, Illinois; and joining the Saint Isidore the Farmer Parish. She was devoted to her family and loved her time spent with them.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM – Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Island Grove, Illinois (16987 North 200th Street Teutopolis, Illinois). A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 to11:00 AM – Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the church. Entombment will be in Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Cemetery Columbarium in Teutopolis, Illinois. In loving memory of Joan, memorials may be made to St. Isidore The Farmer Parish or Crossroads Cancer Center in Effingham, Illinois.
