Sheldon Elmore age 84, of Mason, Illinois, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2025 at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Crain Funeral Home, Newton, Illinois with Pastor Carroll Ross officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of services, Saturday in the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Bethsaida Cemetery, rural Effingham County, Illinois.

Sheldon was born on July 8, 1940, in Jasper County, Illinois the son of Homer and Mamie (Clagg) Elmore. Sheldon married Betty Adamson on June 17, 1962, in Olney, Illinois. They shared fifty-five years of marriage before Betty’s passing on April 15, 2018.

In his early years, Sheldon worked for White Castle in Chicago and for Bender Brothers Construction building grain bins. Sheldon was a lifelong farmer. He had a love for the land and believed in hard work. In addition to farming, he raised and trained standardbred racehorses.

Sheldon loved spending time outdoors. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting coyote. He also enjoyed his daily side by side rides to check on the crops. Sheldon liked listening to country music, often attending both the Edgewood and the Kinmundy Opry’s.

Sheldon is survived by his children, Kendall Sheldon (Alice) Elmore of Dieterich, Sonja Deibel (Tony Althoff) of Effingham, Connie (Alan) Klinc of Springfield, and Kent Elmore of Dieterich; five grandchildren, Travis Elmore, Tyler Elmore, Eric (Makenzie) Deibel, Sara Deibel, and Maggie Klinc; great-grandchild, Vivianne Deibel; sister, Beverly (Paul Dean) Flinn of Milton, FL; sister-in-law, Claire Elmore of Latona; brother-in-law Leland (Angie) Adamson of Effingham, Sister-in-laws Bonnie (Harvey) Scherer of rural Olney and Sally (Larry) Cullop of Vincennes, IN and his faithful rat terrier, Sparky.

His parents, wife Betty, brothers Marvin, Alvin, Merle, Dean, Roscoe, Vonley and Loren Elmore; sisters, Ilene Corso and Kathleen Elmore; sisters-in-law Dorothy, Charlene, Norma Jean, Edith, Rosemary, Ada, Evelyn Elmore, brothers-in-law Arlie Osborn, Tom Hake and Dominic Corso, brother-in-law Jerry and wife Linda Adamson preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethsaida Cemetery Care Fund.
