John David Florida Jr., 56, of Altamont, IL, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL with his wife by his side.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Firefighter Honors and Military Rites at the funeral home. Due to health concerns, the family requests no flowers. John was born on December 11, 1967 in Wheaton, IL, the son of John David Sr. and Juanita Kathryn (Pothin) Florida. He married Peggy Brown on April 5, 1993. John retired from Army National Guard after 20 years of service. He served with the Decatur Unit and Effingham Unit and was deployed to Germany in 2002. John also was a volunteer firefighter for 31 years, serving with Stewardson Fire Department from 1993-2013 and Altamont since 2015. He was currently a diesel mechanic for Petro and good at his job. John was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed NASCAR. He was kind, generous, and always willing to help others. Family was important, and John enjoyed spending time with them.

John is survived by his wife, Peggy Florida of Altamont; children, Kelsey (Vell) Whitehead of Mattoon, Ashleigh (fiancé, Tony Donsbach) Florida of Altamont, and Jackson Levi Florida of Altamont; grandchildren, Keygan, Ava, Colton, Lincoln, Klea, Tylee, Drevyn, Donté; mother, Juanita Florida; motherin-law, Linda Brown; siblings, Mike Florida (Mercedes David), Bill Florida, Rik Florida, Carrie Florida, and Maria (Erik) Lyons; and many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father.
