Evelyn Shumaker (91) of Altamont

Evelyn Shumaker, 91, of Altamont, died at 4:16 p.m., Monday, November 11, 2024 at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont, with Rev. Gary Fortkamp officiating.  Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be held two hours prior to service time at the church.  Memorials may be made to Lutheran Care Center, Immanuel Lutheran Church, HSHS Hospice, or the donor’s choice.  Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Evelyn Martha (Yagow) Shumaker was born on Sunday, May 7, 1933 in Altamont to Charles and Martha (Meyer) Yagow.  She married James Ronald Shumaker on June 30, 1957 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Benning officiating.  She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid, mixed choir, and served in various capacities over the years.  Evelyn also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and enjoyed bowling, and also volunteered with the In Stiches quilting group.  She enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting events and travel with great friends over the years.

In addition to her husband of over 67 years, she is survived by; her daughters, Carolyn (Bernie) Hankins-Rusk of Olney, Joanne (Mike) Schlechte of Effingham and Sara (Rich) Meier of Effingham; sister, Edith Miller of Altamont; grandchildren, Derek (Amber) Hankins, Megan (Devan) Henderson, Tyler (Danae) Meier, Hilary Meier, Heidi (Phil) Kinkelaar, Hali (Devin) Frailey; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her parents; brothers, Walter, Erhard and John Yagow; sister, Hildegarde Heichelbech; son-in-law, Ron Hankins.
