Carroll Dean Crain, 86, of Kinmundy, Illinois, passed away at 7:19 pm Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

Carroll was born on March 19, 1938, at the Schneider Farm in rural Kinmundy the son of Ollie Owen and Naomi (Schneider) Crain. He married Mary Arletha Butts on May 30, 1957, Kinmundy and they shared 56 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on December 31, 2013. Carroll spent his working career as a union laborer, having helped put in Interstate 57. Carroll was a man of many passions, with a love for the outdoors that was second to none. He spent countless hours fishing, hunting, and trapping, with a deep respect for nature that was evident in his every action. Carroll's love for the natural world was an integral part of who he was, and his collection of Indian artifacts and arrowheads was a testament to his fascination with the history of the land he loved. As a member of the NRA and of the Christian Faith, Carroll believed firmly in the importance of community and the value of shared beliefs.

Carroll is survived by his children: Jock Crain of Kinmundy, Julie (Ed) Green of Kinmundy, Betsy O'Leary of Kinmundy, Della (Mark) Middleton of Kinmundy; 13 grandchildren: Lacey Braddy, Caleb Middleton, Seth Green, Laura Spiller, Audrey McCammick, Cody Middleton, Luke O'Leary, Kari Embrey, Sarah Bridges, Will O'Leary, Rachel O'Leary, Levi Crain, Macy O'Leary; 26 great-grandchildren; special friend: Lynda; his sisters: Rena (Kent) O'Dell of Kinmundy, Helen Shafer of Alma, Donna Linder of Iuka. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; 2 great-grandchildren: Zach Braddy, and Morgan Green.

Funeral services to celebrate Carroll's life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the McGriff Funeral Home in Kinmundy with Kevin Braddy officiating. Burial will follow at the Phillips Cemetery, rural Kinmundy. Visitation will be held on Friday evening at the funeral home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Carroll's memory to the Phillips Cemetery. The McGriff Funeral Home in Kinmundy is honored to be entrusted with the families care and arrangements.
