Hazel M. Wattles, age 97, of Louisville, Illinois, passed away Monday afternoon, September 30, 2024, at her home.

She was born September 17, 1927, in Xenia, the daughter of Aaron and Mertie (Carneal) Fatheree. She was united in marriage to Gerald Von “Jake” Aldrich on May 18, 1948, and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1983. She later married Warren F. Wattles on November 19, 1991, and he preceded her in death on February 12, 1994. Hazel worked as a beautician for 25 years, and later at Clay County Hospital in the Dietary Department for 14 years. As a Gold Star mother, she carried a legacy of both sacrifice and strength. She will be remembered for being a generous person to others. Hazel enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and working jigsaw puzzles and word searches. She was faithful in studying her Bible, she had attended First Christian Church in Flora, and recently the Louisville Christian church, where she seldomly missed a Sunday.

She is survived by her two daughters: Carolyn (Dennis) Shoemaker of Buchanan, Tennessee and Sherry (Gene) Roley of Effingham; 7 grandchildren: Jill (Rod) Hoyt of Louisville, Erin (Bryan) Werner of Troy, Kelly Lutes of Mt. Vernon, Washington, Adam Aldrich of Warner Robbins, Georgia, Curtis Roley of Effingham, Timothy (Ellie) Aldrich of Germany, and Joshua Aldrich of Germany; and 6 greatgrandchildren: Whitney Hoyt of Leland, North Carolina, Jenna Hoyt of Louisville, Jacob Hoyt of Louisville, Emma Aldrich of Germany, Noah Lutes of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Grayson Lutes of Mt. Vernon, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; 2 sons: Gary Michael “Mike” Aldrich and Gerald “Jerry” Von Aldrich II; 4 brothers: Brian, Ernest, Earl, and Merle Fatheree; and a sister: Mary Thompson.

A graveside ceremony with interment will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Red Brush Cemetery, Louisville with Gary Kuhlig officiating. Those who wish to attend are asked to arrive directly at the cemetery. Arrangements are by Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Rather than sending floral arrangements or gift items, the family welcomes donations to a charity close to your heart. This gesture would truly honor Hazel's memory.
