Eric K. Isom, 83, formerly of Sesser, IL, passed away Monday, September 23, 2024 at his home in Effingham, IL.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on October 5, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Sesser, IL. 5422 Church Street, (off Rt. 148) Sesser, IL 62884. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM and the Service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Sesser/Valier Ministerial Alliance Food Bank and will be accepted at the funeral home. Arrangements are in the care of Bauer Funeral Home, 1212 West Evergreen Avenue, Effingham, IL 62401.

Eric was born to Leo Isom and Hilda (Shurtz) on March 14, 1941 in West Frankfort, IL.

A dedicated law enforcement officer for 27 years, Eric served his community with unwavering loyalty, always putting the needs of others before his own. During his distinguished career, he earned 40 letters of appreciation and two letters of commendation, a testament to his dedication and professionalism. In2018, Eric was honored with the Legacy Award for his pivotal role in creating the Resident Officer Program of Elgin (ROPE), which strengthened community ties and enhanced public safety. The popular ROPE concept was embraced by police departments throughout the US.

His legacy extends far beyond his service badge. He cherished his family deeply and always took time to listen to them. Eric’s home was a sanctuary for friends and family, filled with the sounds of laughter, stories, and relaxing times on the front porch.

Outside of his law enforcement career, he found joy in golfing and competitive shooting. His creativity flourished through his woodworking, metalworking, and tremendous talent with his oil paintings. He was always looking for ways to improve everything. Eric was known for his inquisitive mind and infectious sense of humor. He had a unique gift for connecting with people and engaging them in conversation as they were drawn to his warmth and genuine concern for others. His spirit will live in the countless lives he touched.

Eric is survived by his wife, of 43 years, Bonnie (LeRoy) of Effingham, IL; brothers Faron (Yukimi) of Santa Monica, CA, and Stephen (Diana) Isom of Kuna, Idaho; sisters April Ostema of Tavares, FL, Bonnie Kroll of WA, Cynthia Isom of AZ and Deidre (Barrett) Travis of Montclair, VA; daughter Andrea (Jeff) Burzlaff of Elgin, IL; sons Eric “Kent” (Barbara) Isom, Jr. of Appleton, WI, and David (Barbara) LeRoy of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Stephanie (Matt), Joe (Kim), Ellie (Jackson), Carter, Cady and Ben, and great-grandchildren Nolan, Remy and Kellen.

Eric was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kerry Isom; sister, Rebecca (Isom) Martin; and son, Brian LeRoy.
