Joseph J. “Smokey Joe” Weis, 87 of Teutopolis, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery with military rites. A Knights of Columbus rosary and Fourth Degree service will be held at 3:45 pm, with visitation following until 7:00 pm, Tuesday at the church. Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Bauer Funeral Home in Teutopolis.

Joe was born January 24, 1937 in Teutopolis, the son of Ferdinand and Amelia (Koebele) Weis. He served with the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. Joe married Patricia A. (Hardiek) Meyers on February 25, 1995. Joe was a member of St. Francis Church, the Teutopolis American Legion Post #924, D.A.V., Effingham Elks #1016, and volunteered on the Teutopolis Fire Department. He was also a Fourth Degree member of the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council #2874.

Joe is survived by his wife, Pat; brother, Jim “Red” Weis; sisters, Mary Catherine “Kate” Schmidt and Anne Weis, all of Teutopolis; step-sons, Gary (Terri) Meyers and Jeff (Sherri) Meyers, both of Effingham; 7 step-grandchildren and 9 great-step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Kurt (Betty) Schmidt, Mike (Brenda) Schmidt, Steve (Cathy) Schmidt, LeeAnn (Jay) Cook, and Kay Schmidt.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Leo Schmidt.
