On 07/19/2024, the Lord called home his faithful servant Janice Louise Flake, age 83, of Tallahassee, Florida. With the help of family and friends, she got her final wish to pass peacefully in Florida.
Janice was born on November 24, 1940, to Joseph Berlen and Carrie Eloise (Clark) Flake at their home-place in Cottonwood Township, Lerna, Illinois. She transferred from Cumberland High School prior to her Senior year and graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in Decatur, Illinois in 1958. She went on to earn a Bachelors, Masters, and then a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on October 15, 1973. She was initiated as a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon (Honorary Mathematics Society) May 3, 1960. Teaching was her passion. Her career took her through five years on the faculty at Eastern Illinois University from 1969-1974 and ten years on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she conducted research and made presentations on the educational use of mathematics in the classroom. She then joined the faculty of Florida State University at Tallahassee for nearly 34 years, researching, teaching, and advising graduate students on children’s mathematical learning and educational uses of technology. She retired as Professor Emerita of Florida State University. She will be remembered for her love of mathematics and technology and the teaching thereof. Janice spent her retirement years in Tallahassee in a home she had constructed for herself and her mother. She will be laid to rest in Janesville Cemetery in Coles County Illinois beside her mother, father, and brother who passed before her.
Janice is survived by her maternal cousins: Connie Clark Jacobs of Elk Grove, CA; David Clark of Toledo, Illinois; Jill Clark Mathenia of Toledo, Illinois.
