Carolyn Louise (Burnside) Story, age 88, of Newton passed away July 21, 2024, at Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, Illinois.
Private family services will be held. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to HSHS Home Care & Hospice. Crain Funeral Home, Newton, Illinois is assisting the family with arrangements.
Carolyn was born on September 28, 1935, in Olney, Illinois, the daughter of Medford and Irene (Hall) Burnside. Carolyn graduated from Newton Community High School with the class of 1953. She graduated from Lockyear Business College, Evansville, Indiana. Carolyn married Bobby Story on August 22, 1954. They were married at Kedron Methodist Church by Bobby’s grandfather, Rev. J. T. Story. The couple lived in Champaign, Illinois, where she worked at Collegiate Cap and Gown as a secretary, until Bobby graduated from the University of Illinois. They also lived at Fort Lee, Virginia, while Bobby was in the U.S. Army Reserve. They returned to Jasper County in 1957 where Carolyn farmed alongside Bobby until the couple retired in 2005. Carolyn assisted with the livestock as well as working in the fields and driving tractors and trucks. She chopped almost all the silage on the farm after 1976. Carolyn loved all aspects of farming and country life, including mowing the yard and working in the garden. She also enjoyed bowling on a team that won the League Championship 1964-65. Carolyn was a faithful member of the Kedron United Methodist Church where she served as the Sunday School Secretary.
Carolyn will be loved and remembered by her son, Lee (Karla) Story of Newton, grandson Jason Story of Peoria, granddaughter Miranda (Trent) Mason of Effingham, and great-granddaughter Aria Mason. Also surviving are cousins Mike (Sherry) Hall of Dundas and Pat Ann (Bill, Sr.) McCluney of Effingham.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Bobby Story, mother Irene Robards, stepfather Sylvan (Shine) Robards, and father Medford Burnside.
