Leonard “Hoot” Greenwood, 91, of Effingham, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family.

He was born on November 27, 1932, in Flora, IL, to the late Leonard Sr. and Edna (Hall) Greenwood. He married his high school sweetheart, June Bullard, on December 24, 1952, and they were blessed with three daughters, Jan, Lynn, and Tracy. Leonard was a 1950 graduate of Flora High School and served his country as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. In 1965, he helped Jim McDaniel build the first truck stop in Effingham, the Union 76 Truck Plaza where he served as the general manager for over 30 years and later as the Safety and Transportation Director at the Effingham Truck Sales before retiring in 2011. Hoot was an esteemed member of the community. A congregant of Willow Street Church of Christ (now Cornerstone Church), he also served as a deacon. Family was everything to him, and he was happiest when surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild whether at his home away from home at the Marriott Newport Beach Villas, relaxing on the beach in Oahu, or simply chatting with them on a front porch swing. He always looked forward to his wife June’s annual family reunions and watching and attending Cardinal baseball games. Leonard never met a Lincoln Town Car that he didn’t like, and enjoyed sunny, summer afternoons riding on his John Deere.

Leonard is survived by his wife, June (Bullard) Greenwood of Effingham; daughters Jan (Tod) Rasmussen of Anaheim, CA; Lynn (Robert) Patterson of Effingham; and Tracy (Dan) Van Mil of Huntington Beach, CA; grandchildren Colby Patterson, Erika (fiancé Maury Wennbo) Rasmussen, Noah (Abbie) Van Mil, and Gavin Van Mil; and great-grandchild, Autumn Rasmussen.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 pm on Friday, July 12, 2024, at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham prior to the funeral service at 5 pm. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
