Mary Lou (Loy) Yocum, 93, of Edgewood, IL, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Willowbrook Memory Support Residences in Effingham.

Mary Lou was born at home in Effingham County on August 22, 1930, the daughter of Ralph and Caroline (Hook) Loy. She married Ervin E. Yocum on February 6, 1954, and they shared 68 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on July 3, 2022.

She is survived by her children, Dennis, Kim, Carrie, Daniel, and Bonnie; 14 grandchildren, 27 greatgrandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Susan (Jim) Feldhake and Judy (David) Ochs.

Mary Lou was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church of Edgewood for many years. She was an avid quilter and her family benefitted from her talent. She had a fiery personality that her children loved most of the time. Ervin and Mary Lou were involved in politics. They instilled in their children the right to vote, especially for the democratic party. She served as an election judge in Effingham County. Ervin and Mary Lou loved to travel, visit with family and watching the Cubs. In her early years, she worked the Illinois Glove Factory, Norge, and the Holiday Inn as a waitress. Later on, she become Postmaster at the Edgewood Post Office until her retirement in 1990.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin; grandson, Eric King; great-granddaughter, Jodee Campbell; sons-in-law, Don Olivier and Curt McKinney; brother, Robert (Joy) Loy; sisters, Virginia (Henry) Wendt, Rita (Robert) Yocum, and Irene (Mark) Pocrnich; and sister-in-law, Linda Murry.

There will be no services. Arrangements are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here
