Dr. John Chalstrom, 81, of Effingham passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

John was an Iowan at heart.  After growing up there, he attended the University of Iowa where he earned his undergraduate degree (1964) and his medical degree (1968). It was there that he met and then married his wife of 56 years, Diana.

After completing his medical internship, a draft assignment to Korea with the U.S. Army, and a year of private practice in Taylorville, John and Diana settled in Effingham (1973) where they established his family practice medical office. He cared for many residents of Effingham and the surrounding communities for 30 years until his retirement. He truly enjoyed practicing medicine and serving his patients and their families.

Apart from rooting on all Iowa Hawkeye sports teams and the St. Louis Cardinals, he loved spending time with his dogs.

John is survived by Diana; his daughter Ann (Eli) Maskaleris of Park Ridge, IL; his son Jack (Jennifer) of Chesterfield, MO; his grandson Nicholas Chalstrom and granddaughter Alyssa Maskaleris.

A private service for family will be held. Should you wish to remember John, consider donating to an animal rescue or no-kill animal adoption shelter of your choice.
