Gary “Poppy” Jones, age 84, of Louisville, Illinois, passed away Thursday morning, April 18, 2024.

He was born August 8, 1939, in Iola, the son ofHerman and Nellie (Mears) Jones. He was united in marriage to Glenda Lee Helms on July 13, 1989, in Paducah, Kentucky, and together they have shared 34 wedding anniversaries.

Gary had worked as a superintendent at Mt. Carmel Sand and Gravel for 30 years. Throughout the years he always looked forward to fishing and spending time with his brother, Dempsey. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, mushroom hunting, taking his grandkids deer hunting, and hosting fish fries for his family. Gary, affectionately known as “Poppy” to his grandkids, never passed up a chance to snuggle his grandbabies. He and Glenda often enjoyed taking the grandkids on rides through the country after a trip to get ice cream. He was a member of the North Harter Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife: Glenda Jones of Louisville; 3 daughters: Wendy (Brian) Jenner of Olney, Misty (Reid) Marlow of Flora, and Valerie (Zach) Goodin of Flora; grandchildren: McKenzi (Phillip) Frederick of Flora, Dalton (Cheyenne) Blair of Xenia, Briar Blair of Louisville, Aiden Marlow of Flora, Addison Marlow of Flora, Seager Broome of Ohio, Ivy Vaughn of Olney, Brittany (Matt) Tolliver of Flora, Cody (Jena) Groves of Flora, Jordan Mette of Flora, and Makenna Mette of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; 13 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; 2 sisters: Virginia Glover of Louisville and Madonna Holloway of Flora; and several in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Dempsey Jones; and 2 sons-in-law: Donald Blair and Jimmie Vaughn.
