Bettie D. Mellendorf (87) of Effingham

Bettie D. Mellendorf, 87, of Effingham, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at her home.

There will be no public services. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Effingham. Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here.

Bettie was born on September 2, 1936 in Prairie Township, Shelby County, Illinois, the daughter of Lloyd and Madonna (Blake) Schlechte. She married Floyd Mellendorf in September of 1954 and they later divorced in 1978; to this union one son was born, Kevin. Bettie worked in retail at numerous stores over the years, most recently a BonWorth. She was a lifetime LA Dodgers fan. She enjoyed watching U of I Basketball and NASCAR, her favorite driver being Dale Earnhardt Jr. Bettie also enjoyed working in her yard.

Bettie is survived by her son, Kevin (JoAnn) Mellendorf of Sullivan; grandson, Brian (Caitlin) Mellendorf of Sullivan; granddaughter, Kristy (Shane) Brownfield of Champaign; siblings, Ramona Radloff of Strasburg, Donna “Duckie” Johnson (Ron) of Stewardson; and Warren Schlechte of Effingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, George Schlechte.
