Virginia Walborn, 90, of San Diego, CA, passed away peacefully after a short illness on March 20th, 2024 at Pacifica House Hospice, Carlsbad CA.
Ginger was born at her family farm north of Altamont, IL, in the Blue Point community on June 26, 1933, the first child of Bruno and Hulda Mueller-Holste. She had 4 siblings, Margaret, Lawrence, Roberta, and Roger. After graduating high school in 1951, Ginger attended Lutheran Nursing College in St. Louis, MO., graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1954. With 3 of her classmates (1 other from Altamont), she drove out to Albuquerque NM to work at the newly built County Indian Hospital. There in Albuquerque she met Don Walborn whom she married in1956. After a brief stint back in Alliance Ohio (Don’s hometown) where their first son Michael was born, they moved back to Albuquerque. There they had 2 more sons, Bradley and David. In 1967 they moved to San Diego for a new job opportunity for Don. They settled in the neighborhood of Pacific Beach and started attending Bethany Lutheran Church. Ginger began her long and impactful career at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in Labor and Delivery that year, eventually becoming a charge nurse. She was known for her no nonsense, get stuff done ethic, guided by a heart of gold. While raising 3 boys and working full time, she made time for several committees at Bethany Lutheran, and was a member of the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League). She retired from Scripps in 1996, but stayed active in the Lutheran Church, continued doing charity work, and fed her love of travel. Living in a military town, Ginger felt the needs of young military families and served them in many ways. She also loved family history, keeping in contact with many relatives on both the Holste and Walborn sides. Even in her last years, she maintained her connections to family, nursing classmates, co-workers, the Bethany Lutheran family, and many others, touching their hearts with her concern and interest in their lives. She was a great friend to many and is missed very much.
A celebration of life will be held May 4th, 1pm, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2051 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA. A memorial service will also be held for family and friends in Illinois at a later date to be determined.
She was preceded in death by her father Bruno Holste, mother Hulda (Mueller) Holste, husband Donald Walborn, sister Margaret (Holste) Miller and brother in law Norman Miller. She is survived by her sons Michael Walborn, Bradley Walborn, David Walborn and his wife Sherry Walborn, grandson Tommy Walborn, siblings Lawrence Holste, Roberta Jenkins, and Roger Holste.
Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations to a charitable organization of the donor’s choice, or to the LWML (lwml.org).
