Leavitt Higgs, 88, of Altamont, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2024 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont with Rev. Ed Wojnar officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2024 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church After School Program, American Diabetes Association, American Kidney Fund, Salem Methodist Church Cemetery or the donors choice.

Leavitt was born on Thursday, September 5, 1935 in rural Altamont to Jesse and Birdie (Smith) Higgs. He married Edith Beccue on June 22, 1968. He was a retired lifelong farmer and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Leavitt served in the Army National Guard.

He is survived by: his wife of over 55 years, Edith ‘Edie’ Higgs, Altamont; sons, Jeff (Carla) Higgs, Altamont and Mike (Nell ‘Chris’) Higgs, Carollton, KY; daughter, Teresa Cowman, Defuniak Springs, FL; sisters, Wanda Phillips, Altamont, Hilda Shumaker, Effingham; 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; his parents; son-in-law, Greg Cowman; brother, Melvin ‘Dick’ (Mary) Higgs; sisters, Pauline (Kenny) Vail, Jessie Lou (Charles) Hooks and Christine Wilcox; brothers-in-law, Lafey Phillips; and grandson, Kyle Higgs.
