Junior O. Butts, 96, of Kinmundy, Illinois, passed away at 2:40 pm Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the Salem Township Hospital in Salem, Illinois.

Junior was born on June 10, 1927, in rural Kinmundy, the son of Orion and Edith (Burkett) Butts. Junior's early years were spent on the family farm, where he developed a love for the land and the outdoors. This connection to his roots would shape his character and his future. As a young man, he answered the call of duty and was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country with honor during World War II. His service was a point of pride and instilled in him a sense of discipline and commitment that he carried throughout his life. Upon returning from the war, Junior embraced the life of a farmer with vigor and purpose. His hands were rarely still, as he tended to his crops and livestock with a care that spoke to his deep respect for the earth and its bounty. Junior's work ethic and integrity made him a respected figure in the agricultural community, and his advice and friendship were sought by many. Junior was united in marriage to Arline Moses on August 13, 1953, in Salem, Illinois, and they shared 32 years of marriage before Arline preceded him in death on January 23, 1986. Junior's love for the outdoors extended beyond his professional life. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, finding solace and joy in the quiet moments by a stream or in the woods. These hobbies were more than pastimes; they were a way for him to connect with nature and the simple pleasures of life. Above all, Junior cherished the time he spent with his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a doting grandfather. His legacy is carried on in the laughter of his children, the stories shared at family gatherings, and the love that binds them together.

Junior is survived by his children: Sharon Mansker, and Lindell “Chuck” Butts; grandchildren: William (Seandee) Weems, James (Stephanie) Weems, Misty (Gary) White, Emily (Dustin) Neff, Mason (Abigial) Butts, John Seal; 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Jack Butts; sister and brother-in-law: Wanda (Ivan) DeVore.
