Clarence W. Unkraut (95) of rural Effingham

Clarence W. Unkraut, 95, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024 at his home in rural Effingham. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Monday, February 19, 2024 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held at the Community Building by the Lake Sara Dam from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday with a rosary to follow. Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities. Arrangements are in the care of Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. 

Clarence was born January 27, 1929 in Effingham, the son of Frank and Jennie (Homann) Unkraut. He married Jeanette A. Pruemer on September 13, 1958 and she preceded him in death in 2014.

Clarence was a retired rural carrier, lifelong farmer, National Weather Service observer for 25 years, beekeeper, sawmill operator, and gardener extraordinaire. He was also one of the original founders of the Effingham Farmer’s Market, a lifelong member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, and one of the leading spokesmen for the Daylight Donuts Morning Coffee Club.

Clarence is survived by his two sons, Dave (Darlene) and Matt (Beth), both of Effingham; three daughters, Peggy (Curt) Valenti of Effingham, Jane (Randy) Ruholl and Jill (Maurus) Schumacher, both of Teutopolis; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren also survive.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter, Mary Ann; and siblings, Helen Unkraut and Fred Unkraut “Brother Otto”.
