Melvina Anna Lading, 91, of Strasburg, IL, passed away at 6:54 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 18, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg, IL, with Rev. Kene Whybrew officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Strasburg, IL. Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Cemetery, Alzheimer’s Association, or the Strasburg Community Improvement Endowment. Arrangements are by Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg, IL.
Melvina was born on August 30, 1932, at home in rural Strasburg, IL, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Popendicker) Mueller. She graduated from Strasburg High School in 1950 and went on to attend Sparks College in Shelbyville. Melvina worked for the Standard Oil Company in Decatur, IL from 1950-1952. She married Dwight F. Lading on June 14, 1952. Melvina worked in the housewares department at K-Mart in Mattoon and later Effingham for a total of 23 years, retiring in 1997. Melvina and Dwight enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg, IL and helped with the planning for the Strasburg 100th and 125th Anniversary Celebrations. Melvina loved embroidery, crocheting, making baby blankets, and collecting dolls. She also enjoyed baking pies, cookies, and especially cakes, which she decorated for her grandchildren’s birthday and confirmation celebrations.
Melvina is survived by her husband, Dwight; four children, Dennis Lading and wife Nitelle of Effingham, IL, Debra Wittenberg and husband Darrell of Troy, IL; Karen Kull and husband Gary of Strasburg, IL, and Kendall Lading and wife Shelley of Troy, IL; 11 grandchildren Marisa Szeluga (Todd), Rachel Miller (Leonard), Shannon Wascher (Nathaniel), Christopher Lading (Margaret), Rebecca Lading (special friend Patrick Bowden), Krystal Friese (Brock), Jenna Layton (Joshua), Timothy Wittenberg (Colleen), Megan Rapp (Tom), Amanda Lading, and Jennifer Engelbrecht (Alexander); two step-grandchildren, Travis Stankiewitz and Ashley Stankiewitz; 16 greatgrandchildren, Calvin Szeluga, Oliver Wascher, Marley Szeluga, Avery Miller, Zaida Wascher, Elliot Miller, Atticus Wascher, Noah Friese, Asher Lading, Brielle Friese, Austin Miller, Reid Lading, Camden Layton, Finn Friese, Harper Layton, Paige Layton, and one more on the way; one step-great granddaughter, Lilianna Stankiewitz; sisterin-law, Elizabeth Mueller of Joliet, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings, Sylvia Homann (Martin), Beulah Brusso (Calvin), Harold Mueller, Lela Childress (Gene), and Howard Mueller in infancy. The family wishes to thank StoneBridge Memory Care in Effingham for their love and excellent care of Melvina.
