Frank J. Kabbes, 90, of Effingham, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Willowbrook Memory Care in Effingham.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Monday, January 15, 2024, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday with a Knights of Columbus rosary to follow.  Memorial donations may be given to St. Anthony Parish, St. Anthony Schools, Quincy University, or the donor's choice.  Arrangements are in the care of Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham.

Frank was born February 6, 1933, in Effingham, the son of William and Agnes (Braun) Kabbes.  He married Viola M. Tipsword on November 13, 1954, and she preceded him in death on March 13, 1987.  He later married Anne Brumleve Schniederjon on June 11, 1988.
Frank attended St. Anthony Grade School and St. Anthony High School and was a graduate of Quincy College with a degree in business.  He went on to serve in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.  After his honorable discharge from the Army, Frank played for the New York Yankees in the minor league and then worked for Ford Motor Company in Lima, Ohio.  He moved back to Effingham in 1958 and started his 40-year banking career, retiring as the Chairman, President, and CEO of Midland States Bancorp and Effingham State Bank, now known as Midland States Bank.  
Frank was a firm believer in giving back to his church and community.  Frank was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Effingham Knights of Columbus #665, and the Effingham American Legion Post #120 as well as numerous other organizations and boards throughout his years. He was a member of the first St. Anthony Lay Advisory Board and was the first layperson to serve as the Chairman of the Quincy University Board of Trustees.  Frank also was active in the community of Effingham, especially in support of the TREC recreational trails and the nativity statues at The Cross.  Most of all, Frank valued the time spent with his family. He leaves behind a legacy of the importance of faith, family, and community by the example of his life.

Frank is survived by his wife, Anne of Effingham; children, Kathy (Jim) Wear of Springfield, Michael (Jody) of Normal, Kim (Rob) Calvo of Sugar Land, TX, and David (Judy) of Lake Bluff; step-children, Audra (Robert) Schultz of Effingham, Frank L. Schniederjon (Julie R. Reedy) of Effingham, and Cindy (Jeff) Windau of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Sarah (Pieter) du Plessis, Adam (Kate) Wear, Jacob (Kendyl) Wear, Jenny (Justin) Fuente, Emily (Josh) Kauten, Luke Kabbes, Paul (Emily) Kabbes, Trent (Jessica) Calvo, Kristine (Brent) Broussard, Danielle (Zach) Schroeder, Drew (Ryan) Kabbes, Jamie Kabbes, Mary Kate (Michael) Potrzeboski, Joan Kabbes, Christo (Kelly) Schultz, Emmie Schultz, Frank G. Schniederjon, Nicole Schniederjon, August Windau, Regan Windau, and George Windau; 28 great-grandchildren; brother, Ron (Joyce) Kabbes of Effingham and sister, Norma McCullough of Homer Glen.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Viola; two infant children, John and Karla; great-granddaughter, Harper Wear; brothers, William, Vic, and Don Kabbes; and brother-in-law, Ron McCullough.
