Phyllis B. "Granny" Petty (92) of Beecher City

Phyllis B. Petty, affectionately known as Granny, passed away peacefully in her home in rural Beecher City, Illinois, on December 21, 2023. She was 92.

Born on March 31, 1931, to Anson and Letha (Buzzard) Wright, Phyllis's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and the joy she brought to those around her. Phyllis's early years were spent in the rural simplicity of Beecher City, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse at Hog Creek and later Beecher City High School. On March 18, 1949, in a ceremony at her sister's home, Phyllis married the love of her life, Holly Eugene "Hodge" Petty. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and hard work. As a devoted homemaker and farm helper, Phyllis's hands were rarely still.

She was the beloved matriarch of a family that includes her husband Holly, her children Janet Matteson, David (Joyce) Petty, Darryl (Lynn) Petty, and Jim (Vennia) Petty, all of whom remained close to their roots in Beecher City. Her legacy continued to flourish through her 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Phyllis's talents were as diverse as they were impressive. An avid baker, she was renowned for her delectable pies that graced many family gatherings. Her skills as a seamstress were unparalleled, creating beautiful garments and quilts that became cherished heirlooms. With a natural ear for music, she could play various instruments without ever needing to read a note, a gift that brought harmony and melody to the lives of many. For 25 years, Phyllis was a dedicated member of the Beecher City Kluthe Band, sharing her musical gifts and camaraderie with the community. Her faith was an integral part of her life, evidenced by her longstanding membership at the First Baptist Church in Effingham, where she nurtured her spiritual growth and fellowship. Granny, as she was lovingly called by all who knew her, had a presence that was as comforting as it was inspiring. Her home was a beacon of warmth, where the door was always open, and the coffee pot was always on. She had a knack for making everyone feel special, and her wisdom was sought after by those navigating the complexities of life.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Loren Wright, and her sisters Dalene Frailey, Vera Wills, Veda Kalin, and Laura Wright.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her spirit remains a guiding light for her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Beecher City with Pastor Greg Habegger officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in the Petty Home Cemetery.
