Donald Franklin Smith, 82, affectionately known as “Smitty” to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at his home in Mode, Illinois.

He was born on June 26, 1941, in Shelbyville, the beloved son of Fred and Ethel (Davis) Smith. On December 30, 1961, he married the love of his life, Shirley Mae (Welton), and together they embarked on a journey of love, laughter, and adventure that lasted 62 wonderful years.

Smitty’s legacy is lovingly cherished by his devoted wife, Shirley of Mode; his three children, Margerie (Joseph) Gaugh of Cowden, Donald E. (Ruth Ann) Smith of Wilmington, and Andy F. (Tammy Jo) Smith of Mode. His joy was multiplied with the births of his grandchildren, Jessica M. (Brandon) Boehm of Cowden, Ryan Lee Gaugh of Shelbyville, and Tiffany M. (Seath) Moeller of Shelbyville. He took great delight in his great-grandchildren, Collin Glen Boehm, Brady Joseph Boehm, Kerigan Moeller, Ellie Moeller, and Shane. His sister, Faye Tull of Shelbyville, along with his sisters-in-law, Jeannette, Retha, Edna, Jeanna, and Cheryl; brothers-in-law, Dwight and Dick and many adoring nieces and nephews, will hold his memory close to their hearts.

Smitty is preceded in death by his loving parents and his two sisters, Marjorie Bice and Ida Gill, who welcomed him with open arms to his eternal home.

A proud employee of the Shelby County Highway Department, Smitty dedicated 40 years of service, during which he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of his colleagues. His commitment to his work was paralleled only by his devotion to his family and community. Smitty's zest for life was evident to all who knew him. He and Shirley shared a passion for travel, exploring the lower 48 states and Mexico, creating a tapestry of memories and friendships along every mile. His hobbies included attending auctions, and mushroom hunting, which he looked forward to each season. Above all, Smitty was a family man. His love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was boundless, and he reveled in every moment spent with them. Known for his playful teasing and being a jokester, he brought laughter and light-heartedness to every family gathering. Smitty's infectious smile and the twinkle in his eye will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Smitty's life will be held at a later date, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory and the joy he brought into their lives.
