Roger Eugene Swim (64) of Greenup

Roger Eugene Swim, 64, of Greenup, Illinois passed away on Thursday November 9, 2023.

A celebration of life for Roger’s friends and family will be on Wednesday November 15, 2023, at the Ervin Family Barn in Toledo, Illinois at 5:00 pm. A private family graveside service and burial is also scheduled in the Greenup Cemetery. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup is assisting the family.

Roger was born January 10, 1959, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Gene L Swim and Kay (Carothers) Swim.

Survivors include his children; Shandi Brooke Swim, Andrew Ryan Swim and Grant Matthew Swim and special cat, Waski Gene Swim of 15 years. Siblings; Wayne Swim (Brenda), Greg Reynolds, Wes Mills, and Sandy Willetts. Nephew Brad (Kristie) Swim, great nieces and nephews Maya and Rylee Kurth, and Noble Griffin, Silas and Josie Swim.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; Janet Mills and niece and nephew Heather and Blaine Kurth.

Roger was a 1977 graduate of Cumberland High School. Roger was a true “Jack of all trades”. He could fix almost anything. Roger was a skilled mechanic and carpenter and enjoyed teaching others along the way. Roger was a perfectionist; he always put a lot of care and thought into everything that he did. In the early 1980’s, he worked alongside his father driving semis across the U.S. for Bekins Van Lines. Roger also had a very successful racing career. He raced motorcycles and quads for the majority of his life both cross country and motocross locally and nationally. He won state and/or district championships almost every year he competed. Shandi was always his #1 fan. Additionally, he loved racing sprint cars, hill climbing, drag racing, and fishing. Kawasaki’s were his preference, he was proud to be Team Green, (and likely always the fastest guy around). Roger was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan and also loved attending Illini basketball games with his brother Wayne. Roger had many hobbies that included building remote control cars, airplanes, and train sets. Roger’s children, though, were always most important to him. He was a very dedicated father. He loved helping coach his sons’ baseball teams and worked with them tirelessly to shape them into the brilliant young athletes they are today. Roger was also loved and appreciated for all of his years of hard work while employed through Ervin Equipment and he loved working there just as much.
