Donald James Carrell, age 96, of Greenup, Illinois, passed away at 7:55 AM – Sunday, November 12, 2023, at his home.

Visitation will be held 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Meyer Funeral Home – Bishop Chapel in Greenup, Illinois, with funeral services to follow. The burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery, north of Greenup, Illinois, with full military rites by the Cumberland County Veterans Association. Donald was born on June 26, 1927, in Casey, Illinois, the son of Jesse and Rose (Kasper) Carrell. He married Wilma Phillipi on June 24, 1957, in Shawneetown, Illinois, and she preceded him in death on September 4, 2000. Donald served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He enlisted in the service on September 13, 1944, and was honorably discharged on July 7, 1946. He was a lifetime member of the Cumberland County Post #4598 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he was very active and always willing to assist with military funeral honors. Donald had worked at the Sinclar Station in Greenup, Ettlebrick Shoe Factory and was a co-owner of the Merchandise Outlet in Greenup for several years. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman.

Donald is survived by: Sister – Nina Zutter of Toppenish, Washington Brother – Robert Carrell of Lake Stevens, Washington Several nephews and nieces also survive.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters Norma McCrory and Phyllis Yaw Barnes, brothers Charles Carrell, Ronald Carrell, and Dewane Carrell (killed in World War II).
