Leonard R. Greuel, 95, passed away Friday, November 3, 2023 at his home in rural Effingham.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2023 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Sigel with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the church, with a parish prayer service to follow. A scriptural rosary led by Effingham Knights of Columbus will be held at 3:30 p.m. for those wishing to attend. Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's School, Catholic Charities, Family Life Center, Effingham Area DeColores, or El Shaddai Homes. Leonard was born May 10, 1928 in Green Creek, the son of Joseph and Florence (Sur) Greuel. He married Rosemary Elizabeth Deters on August 26, 1950 and she preceded him in death in 2017. Leonard served with the United States Army from 1950 to 1952; during the Korean Conflict. Leonard was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, wine-making, and mushroom hunting. He was a 61-year member of the Effingham Knights of Columbus and a 72-year member of the Sigel American Legion. Leonard was also a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.  He was involved with DeColores  and Perpetual Adoration at St Anthony Chapel for over 30 years 

Leonard is survived by his 13 children, Mary Jo Orme of Sigel, Carol (Dale) Apke of Effingham, Michael (Sheila) of Sigel, Kathy (Rick) Syfert of Sigel, Leanne (Steve) Craig of Charleston, Maureen (Dave) Kastl of Effingham, David Greuel (fiancé Deana Harmon) of Sigel, Thomas (Jennifer) Greuel of Sigel, Rosalee (Bill) Thoele of Teutopolis, Loralee (Ron) Kelly of Shumway, Suzie (Steve) Kidd of Millstadt, Kevin (Laura) Greuel of Sigel and Robert (LeAnn) Greuel of Sigel; 38 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Flood of Jewett; sisters-in-law, Norma Greuel of Effingham, Dolores (Bernard) Will of Heartville, and JoAnn Deters of Teutopolis; brother-in-law, Art (Betty) Deters of Teutopolis.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; wife; great-grandchild, Dezarea Woods; siblings, Ruth (Francis) Stodden, Hilda (Morris) Dasenbrock, Mildred (Harry) Ludwig, Louis Greuel, Mary (Roy) Michels, and Paul Greuel and Marian Greuel, in infancy; brothers-in-law, Kenny Flood and Cletus Deters; sisters-in-law, Luella (Joe) Will and Eileen (Charles) Moon.
