Born on November 14, 1925, in Shelby County, Illinois, she was the daughter of Homer and Ruth (Brewer) Moore. She married the love of her life, Harold E. Smith, on February 10, 1946, and they shared a beautiful life together until his passing on August 14, 2013. Mary was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to her family and her work. Alongside her husband, they ran a successful dry-walling and painting business for 40 years. The partnership and commitment she shared with Harold were not just evident in their professional life but was a testament to their personal life as well. Mary found great joy in working alongside Harold, and their devotion to each other was a shining example of love and partnership. Mary was a woman whose essence could be summed up in one word, love. She gave with all she had to the ones she held dear. Her generous spirit and unwavering love for her family were the cornerstones of her life. She was a beacon of strength, resilience, and love to all who knew her. One of Mary’s most enduring commitments was to her Christian faith. Mary enjoyed traveling with family, especially to Dubai, gardening, canning, bird watching and collecting bird knick-knacks. Above all, Mary cherished her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Johnston of Shelbyville, and Ramona (Steve) Shrake of Mattoon. She was also a loving grandmother to Todd Johnston, Mark (Kim) Johnston, Christina (Scott) Keller, Chad (Amanda) Johnston, Lora Shrake, and Lisa (Chris) Perry. Mary was also a proud great-grandmother to 14 and great-great-grandmother to eight. She is also survived by her sister, Eloise Lockwood of Moweaqua.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Homer, and Ruth Moore; her husband Harold; her sisters Wanda Gordon, Eileen Phegley, and Beverly Morrison; her brothers John Moore and Marvin Moore, and her son-in-law Charlie Johnston.
