David R. Shumate (68) of Stewardson

David R. Shumate, 68 of Stewardson, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to time of service, Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be given to the National Kidney Foundation or the American Diabetes Association. David was born November 14, 1954 in Danville, the son of Delbert A. and Dorothy M. (Spain) Shumate. He married Cheryl Overbeck on December 8, 2001. David was a kind and loving husband and father. He loved hunting, target shooting and fishing, and sitting around the campfire with family and friends. There, many stories were told and laughs were shared, leaving memories for all.  He was a collector of several things including coins and canes.  He was also a proud member and past master of Catlin Masonic Lodge #285, though he hasn’t been able to be active in recent years. David will surely be missed, but will always be remembered through his family and friends.

David is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Stewardson; children, Joshua (Lauren) of Catlin and Jesse of Stewardson; grandchildren, Hillary, Frankie, Michael, and Christopher; brothers, Dwight (Dawne) of Mission, TX, Charles (Sherri) of Potomac; sisters, Barbara (Gary) Riggleman of Alvin and Mary (Keith) Osborn of Potomac.

David was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Delbert Allen Jr.
