Joe David Smithson, age 82, of Farina, Illinois passed away at 6:47 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 13, 2023 at Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle in Iola with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Pastor Craig Fritchley will be officiating. Interment will take place at German Reformed Cemetery in Loogootee. Joe was born on December 20, 1940 in Fayette County, Illinois, the son of Everett G. and Ada I. (Bachman) Smithson. He married Ruth A. Hopkins on September 28, 1962 in Vandalia. Joe loved to eat and knew every tasty buffet in the area. He enjoyed going to flea markets and socializing. “Please pray for my family as we lost a wonderful man in our lives this evening. My grandpa Joe was known for working hard his entire life, doing anything for his children/grandchildren/greatgrandchildren, and having one of the biggest hearts! He was surrounded by family and tons of love as he made his way into God’s loving arms. He will be deeply missed by his entire family and friends.”
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Smithson of Farina; sons, Brian Smithson (wife Melodye) of St. Peter, Darin Smithson (wife Stephanie) of Bedford, Indiana, and Bradley Smithson (wife Lori) of Loogootee; brother, Everett Smithson (wife Joyce) of Farina; sister, Elouise Froese (husband Nathan) of Omaha, Nebraska; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Ada Smithson and brother, Gilbert Smithson.
