Joan Simcox, 85, of Altamont, died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont with Dan Laack and Gene Creek officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be for two hours prior to services. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Care Center or The Whoo Hoo Sisterhood.

Joan I. Simcox was born on Sunday, July 3, 1938 in Kinmundy, IL to Clifford V. and Nita F. (Smith) Hawkey. She married Loy M. Simcox on June 2, 1956 at 1st United Methodist Church, Farina, IL. He preceded her death on July 22, 2019. She was very active in her community having volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels, FISH, and at The Cross, Boy Scouts of America den mother and leader, had been a volunteer at the Exhibition Hall at the Effingham County Fair and served as treasurer for 25 years on the Faulk Cemetery Board. She was also very active in politics having been precinct committeeman for Mound 3 for many years, and was treasurer of the Effingham County Republican Central Committee. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Altamont, United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Effingham County Republican Women, VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries serving in many capacities. Joan was retired from the Effingham County Treasurer’s Office (part time under Alma Croft) and the City of Altamont where she had served as City Treasurer and from Francis Auction Company.

She is survived by: her sons, Brett M. (Christine) Simcox and Brad S. (Deb) Simcox all of Altamont; brother, Edward (Sue) Hawkey of Kinmundy; sister, Marlene Thesen of Warminster, PA; 4 grandchildren, Brandon Simcox, Brittany (Jared) Miller, Bryce (Alexandra) Simcox, and Ashley (Joel) Sloan; 8 great grandchildren, Payton, Parker, Phoenix, Chloe, Phinley, Cassidy, and Malichi and Grant.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Lyle Hawkey.
