Jack Boyd Stevenson, 91, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023 peacefully at his earthly home surrounded by his children and beloved pets.

Jack was born on January 27, 1932, in Effingham, IL, the son of Loren Boyd and Madonna Frances (McCallen) Stevenson. He married Dorothy Loleta Matthews on February 11, 1961. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2012. Jack graduated from Effingham High School in 1951 where he was a proud member of the Flaming Hearts football team. After graduation, he became an Effingham City Police officer. The majority of his working years were spent as a tool and die maker at General Electric in Mattoon, IL, where he retired in 1998. Jack’s true passions included his love for Cowboy Active Shooting and riding motorcycles, which he did until age 80. But his most important passion was his dedication and love for his family and pets. Jack marched to the beat of his own drummer during his long and blessed life. He will be remembered by his family and friends as tough on the exterior but a truly kind and gentle man with a heart of gold. As once said by his grandson, “He is a legend” and he will be forever missed.

Jack is survived by his son, Jeff (Heather) Stevenson of St. Joseph, IL; daughter, Tammy (Calvin) Myatt of Effingham; grandchildren, Linda, Greg (fiancée, Holly), Richard (wife, Emily), Shelby, Erica, Chloe, and Jarrett; great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Brynn, Zola, Logan, and Tate; and sister, JoAnn Bernhard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dotty; his parents; cherished stepfather, Charles Sparrow; twin brother, Tom; and brother, Elmer.

No services will be held at this time. However, a private family gathering will be held at a later date in Jack’s honor. Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here
