John A. Latta, 83, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday prior to service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Support Systems, which has provided so much support in helping John’s son David with his accomplishments. John was born on December 19, 1939, in Mt Vernon, IL, the son of Claire and Thelma (Noller) Latta. He married Judy Cherry on June 10, 1967 in Edinburg, IL. John had a deep love and appreciation for music. John earned his Doctorate in Music Education from the University of Illinois and was a lifelong music educator and voice teacher up until his retirement. He took great pride in supporting his daughter’s music. He also was proud of founding a community children’s chorus and being a longtime volunteer with the C.E.F.S. Literacy Program. John sang in many choirs including the Chicago Symphony Chorus, the St. Louis Chamber Chorus, and the Robert Shaw Chorale. He was also a choir director and even directed “The Messiah.” John was instrumental in forming the community performance group that is now F.A.C.E. (Fine Arts, County of Effingham). Besides music, John loved people and playing golf.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy Latta of Effingham, daughter, Heather Latta of Effingham; son, David Latta of Effingham; brother, Jerry; sister, Jane; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James Latta.
