Jean Black, 77, of Altamont, died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at her home.

As per her wishes, she will be cremated and no services will be held at this time. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Effingham County Humane Society.

Jean Marie Black was born on Monday, July 1, 1946 in Rochester, New York to Frank C. and Mildred Caroline (McGarry) Sutton and was raised in Dayton, Ohio. She married William I. ‘Bill’ Black on October 22, 1971 and he preceded her in death on October 5, 1989. Jean and Bill worked horses for many years. When Bill retired, Jean worked for Walton and Haarmann Veterinary Clinic in Effingham, IL. After Bill passed, Jean went back to school at Lakeland College and earned her LPN. Jean was top of her class at the age of 52. She then went to work at Lutheran Care Center in Altamont, IL until she retired. Jean was known for her prodigious vocabulary, her infectious laugh, her quirky sense of humor, her love of reading and knitting. She was an open, generous soul. Her kindness knew no bounds. She will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved her.

She is survived by; her siblings, Ruth (Bill) Powers of Ohio, Margaret Sutton of California, Helen (John) Bailey of Texas, Lorraine Cestone of California and Harry (Sheila) Sutton of Massachusetts; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by; her brother, Frank Sutton and her nephew, Michael F. Powers.
