Scott Anthony "Scotty" Dust (62) of Charleston, formerly of Effingham

Scott Anthony "Scotty" Dust, age 62, of Charleston IL, passed away peacefully at home at 4:25 a.m. on Monday, August 7, 2023.

He was born May 25, 1961 in Decatur, IL, the son of David Edward Dust and Marilyn Philamenia (Brummer) Nelson.

Survivors include his loving wife, Jill Fahy Dust; his parents, David Dust of Effingham, IL and Marilyn Nelson of Effingham, IL; stepchildren, Luke Lawrence of Charleston, IL and Kate Fahy Himick of Marshall, IL; sister, Juli Martin (Duane) of Effingham, IL; niece, Samantha Hicks; and nephew, Alex Hicks.

Scott was preceded in death by his stepfather, Robert Nelson and late wife, Sonna (Cummins) Dust.

Scott was a 1979 graduate of Effingham St. Anthony High School. He proudly served as a medic in the US Army from 1981-1985. Upon his return to the States, Scott continued his education at Eastern Illinois University, graduating in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in philosophy. Scott then shifted his focus to accounting, furthering his studies at Danville Community College and the University of Illinois. He was also accredited as a mixologist and radio DJ. Scott started his professional career in the Chicago area. He worked for several years at NUCON Corporation, first as an accountant, then as head of HR, and finally as plant manager, overseeing production and delivery of recyclable pallets to industries worldwide. Scott later worked for the United States Postal Service as a city carrier in Charleston, IL. Scott was a long-time member of the Charleston Country Club where he was known for his impeccable putting, his quick wit, and his competitive drive. Scott’s life-long passion and talent for golf culminated in his winning the Senior Men’s Championship title in 2022.

A priority for Scott was also spending time with family and friends. He was a loyal confidant, a generous supporter, and fierce protector of those he loved. Scott was a gifted conversationalist who enjoyed meeting people and valued the many friendships he had. He regularly enjoyed discussing politics, was a connoisseur of music, and enjoyed traveling and exploring new places. In Scott’s youth he was a gifted water skier and was rated as a top lifeguard at the age of 16. Scott felt at home on the water and drew much of this from his years growing up at Anthony Acres Resort on Lake Sara, in Effingham.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL.  Immediately following, at 4:00 p.m., a service honoring Scott’s life will be conducted at Adams Funeral Chapel.
