James Laverne Wright (90) of St. Elmo

James Laverne Wright, age 90, of St. Elmo, Illinois passed away at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023 peacefully at his home.

There will be a private family Celebration of Life at a later date. Interment will take place at Springhill Cemetery. Memorials may go to Royal Neighbors of America, St. Elmo American Legion, or the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be expressed by clicking here.

Laverne was born on March 20, 1933 in Loudon Township, Wrights Corner, Illinois, the son of George and Blanche (Durbin) Wright. He served in the United States Army for two years. He worked for Fedders in Effingham, where he spent 39 loyal years. Laverne married Leona (Parrott) Phelan on August 11, 1981; to this union, he gained four stepchildren. He was a member of the American Legion and Royal Neighbors. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his two dogs, Jodi and Buddy.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Wright of St. Elmo; son, Jerry Wright of Simpson, Illinois; brother, Oliver Wright (wife Edna) of St. Elmo, stepchildren, Duane Phelan of Arkansas, Ronald Phelan of Dieterich, Terry Phelan of Arkansas; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Blanche Wright; brothers, Dwight Wright and Gary Wright; sister, Shirley Smith; brother-in-law, Earl Smith; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Wright; and stepdaughter, Peggy Walls.
