Michael J. Mathews (27) of Effingham

Michael J. Mathews, 27, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL with family by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Burial will be held at a later date in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here.

Michael was born on June 16, 1996, in Mattoon, IL, the son of Philip and Joyce (Vogt) Mathews. Mike was a compassionate and generous person who would do anything for anyone. He was a great friend and loved his family. His passion for skateboarding was his life. Mike had a great sense of humor and was always trying to make people laugh. He also was an avid Cubs fan.

Mike is survived by his parents, Phil and Joyce Mathews; brothers, Kurt (Courtney) Mathews and Chris (fiancée, Andrea Milby) Mathews; nephews, Kevin and Kolton Mathews; grandparents, Jim and Nancy Mathews; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Philip Mathews; and grandparents, Clem Vogt, Shirley Vogt, and Doris Vogt.
