Darrel Martens (87) of Effingham

Darrel Martens, 87, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Thursday June 15, 2023 at his home.

No services will be held at this time. Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting the family.

Darrel was born on December 10, 1935, in Dieterich, IL, the son of Ray and Sybil (Galloway) Martens. Darrel served his country in the United States Army National Guard. He married Cindy Stevens on January 27, 1967 in Dieterich, IL by Pastor Turis E. Davis. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2021.

Darrel worked for Illinois Central Railroad all his life, starting from a young age through retirement. He also farmed. Darrel loved golf, golfing everyday he could. He also enjoyed spending time with his golfing buddies, as they would get together to bowl or play pool. Darrel could find value in anything and was a collector of all.

Darrel is survived by his daughter, Kim (Howard) Manuel; grandchildren, Abby (Jarrett) Grewell and Kassie Stanfield; bonus grandchildren, Brittany (Shawn) Garrett and Beau (Sydney) Manuel; great-grandsons, Kolt Grewell and Brooks Grewell; bonus great-grandchildren, Sydnee, Brooklyn, Lexington, and Braxton Garrett; brother, Terry (Wanda) Martens; his nieces; and beloved dog, Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Loyal Martens.
