Gary Denean Bone, 91, of Effingham, IL passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at home surrounded by his loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Effingham County Humane Society or Alzheimer’s Association. Gary was born on August 13, 1931, in Vandalia, IL, the son of Maurice Bone and Bessie Bone Spinner. He married Lois Reeter on May 7, 1960, in Vandalia, IL and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2021. Gary served in the United States Army and was stationed on Staten Island for some time. He graduated from the University of Illinois with an engineering degree, and his name is inscribed on their Bronze Tablet. He worked as a civil engineer at the Illinois Department of Transportation until his retirement. Gary enjoyed playing tennis, traveling with his wife, and spending time with family and friends. After retirement, he volunteered at Meals on Wheels, FISH and Centenary United Methodist Church. He did not know a stranger and always had a kind word to say to everyone.
Gary leaves behind his son, Steve (Judi) Bone; daughters, Renee Woodward and Susan (Bradley) Spawr; 8 grandchildren, Jacob Roderick, Jared Roderick, Kyrstie Roderick, Kierstyn (Chase) Green, Peyton (Keaton) Wright, Braydon Bone, Katie Spawr and Braden Spawr; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister, Annalou Eller.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Bone; parents, Maurice Bone and Bessie Spinner; and brother, Gene Bone.
