Douglas M. Wendling, 69, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham with Rev. Mike Burdick officiating, and will be live streamed on YouTube at the “St. John’s Lutheran Effingham IL” YouTube Channel. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Doug was born on June 21, 1953, in Effingham, IL, the son of Melvin and Ilda (Davis) Wendling. He married Brenda (Mellendorf) Stortzum on November 8, 1991.
Doug worked over 40 years at South-Central FS and TGM in various positions, mostly grain hauling, to which he contributed a lot of the friendships he made during these years. He was a lifetime NRA member and enjoyed bird hunting, horse riding, watching old westerns, crime shows and a good ole game of basketball. He also enjoyed time spent with his family and friends.
Doug is survived by his wife, Brenda Wendling of Effingham; son, Adam (MaryBelle) Wendling of Toledo; stepsons, Trevor (Kelsey) Stortzum of Herrin and Lucas (Lauren) Stortzum of Rogers, AR; step-grandchildren, Andrew Gernigin, Keith Walker, and Aria, Amara and Leah Stortzum; brother, Phillip (Tammy) Wendling of Effingham; mother-in-law, Irma Mellendorf of Dieterich; brothers-in-law, Kent (Janice) Mellendorf of Louisville, Keith (Angie) Mellendorf of Jewett, Scott (Jane) Mellendorf of Montrose, and Steve (Judy Mason) Mellendorf of Ottawa; sister-in-law, Glenda (Gary) Bartels of St. Elmo; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Dale Mellendorf.
