Phyllis was born at the Button home place east of Greenup on Route 40 on July 6, 1925, to Robert Howard and Rose Violet (Hosier) Button. She was the sixth of seven children and enjoyed a delightful childhood with her siblings. There were two families in the Button household, with four older siblings and then the “little girls,” of which Phyllis was one. Within her family and to close friends, Phyllis was known affectionately by the nickname “Pud.” She attended Greenup Grade and Greenup High School, graduating with the class of 1943. After graduation, she and a girlfriend went to work in a war plant in Indianapolis, IN. That didn’t last long because a young man named Walter Lewis Gabel came over and persuaded her to come home and marry him. They wed on June 2, 1945, and enjoyed 74 years of marriage. Walter preceded her in death in July 2019. Phyllis was a homemaker for all but a year when she worked at Ettelbrick Shoe Company. She loved making a home for her family and tending to their needs. Phyllis was a sweet, selfless, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed reading and babysitting her grandchildren. She liked the outdoors and especially loved trees.
Phyllis is survived by her 4 children: Sheryl (Raymond) Shook, Carol Miller, Mark Gabel, and Bob Gabel. She was the best grandma to Brian (Chrissy) Cox, Troy (Jamie) Cox, Amy (Tom) Owens, Brandon (Sarah) Miller, Kelly (James) Landrus, Ashley Gabel, Josie (Colton) Gabel-Crowe, Silas Gabel (Lacey Hornbeck), Kennedy (Cory) Sharp, and Kodie Gabel. Great- grandchildren are Jayce (Taylor) Cox, Trenton Cox, Aliyah Cox, Zoe (D.J.) Sullivan, Darby Sullivan, Hadley Owens, Jackson Owens, Reed Miller, Jude Miller, Charlotte Miller, Riley Long, Chloe Landrus, Brady Landrus, Maggie Landrus, Korbin, Kyla, Coen, Emmett, Scottlynn, Hawkins, Wylie, Swayze Sharp, Izley Sharp, Auzzie Sharp, Haven Martin, and Sage Martin.
