Donald R. Moffett (101) of Cowden

Donald R. Moffett, 101, of Cowden, IL, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and brother passed peacefully in the Shelbyville Manor on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family.

Don was born on September 19, 1921, in Charleston, one of ten children, born to John and Luella (Jones) Moffett. He served in the United States Army and was a World War II veteran. Don married the love of his life, Helen R. Green, on September 10, 1942, in St. Charles, MO and they were blessed with 64 years of marriage before her passing on December 20, 2006. Don worked at the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville, B&W Dozer Salvage in Cowden and together he and Helen farmed in the Cowden area and worked at McElroy Aircraft Salvage in Shelbyville. Don was a licensed pilot, he and Helen enjoyed flying, spending winters in Texas and Don loved to fish.

Surviving are his children: Linda Denton of Herrick, Carolyn (Gene) Wall of Cowden, Roberta Hardimon of Herrick, Lee (Terre Beth) Moffett of Cowden, Dale Moffett of Cowden and Kelley Conley of Casper, WY; brothers: John (Diane) Moffett of Illiopolis and Dave (Jackie) Moffett of Windsor; sister, Barbara Wiley of Florida and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, John and Luella; wife, Helen; sons-in-law: Dale “Dumpy” Denton and Jeff Conley; great-granddaughter, Lillianna Moffett; brothers: Wayne, Dwight and Tom and sisters: Ilenna, Julia and Luella.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden with Darrell Hinkle officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. The burial will take place in Mound Cemetery in rural Cowden with military honors by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made in Don’s name to the Cowden First Responders. Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden is assisting the family.
